Hormonal Causes Of Vaginal Yeast Infections

Most women know that should they get a yeast infection there are a variety of medicated treatment options that can be purchased over the counter at their local pharmacy. The effectiveness of these treatments varies between women but isn’t it a better idea to understand the causes of a yeast infection and then either treat with that knowledge, or avoid an infection altogether!

There are three main triggers discussed here and they are hormonal ones, pregnancy, menopause and menstruation but there are others, so if you do not find your root cause here, do a little more research. Other factors to look into are tight clothing, antibiotics and diabetes. Diabetes is about blood sugar levels, and if your blood sugar is too high this makes you more susceptible because the fungus feeds on sugar. Tight clothing and hanging around in wet clothing like bathing suits can be a factor because you are creating the perfect environment of dampness and warmth. Some antibiotics kill all bacteria good and bad, and so when the good is depleted the fungus is not being held in check anymore and can overgrow and lead to a yeast infection.

Menstruation: Each month your body is undergoing a large change in hormones and the vaginal acidity can be affected. A lack of balance gives the fungus a chance to grow and the acidity aids this, as it is the yeast’s preferred environment.

Pregnancy is a wonderful time in a woman’s life but when pregnant a woman is even more prone to getting yeast infections because of all those fluctuating hormones. Pregnant woman should take care when looking for treatment and should talk to their doctor first.

Menopause – A time of hormonal changes, some women have to have HRT, but there has not been a study done yet that directly links menopausal women to increased chances of yeast infections.

Since it is unlikely you are willing to never have children just to stop the chances of a yeast infection, there is not a lot that can be done in terms of prevention when it is about hormones. Keeping everything else in balance can help, such as a healthy diet, loose clothing and so on. If you believe one of these three are causing your yeast infection you need to talk to your doctor about what your next step could be.
