As tempting as it is to take a long hot bath, the solution for dry skin is a warm bath or shower for no longer than ten minutes. Use a body washes that is made from natural vegetable contents for the gentlest cleansing. Pat your skin dry as opposed to rubbing towel roughly over skin to avoid scratching. This is especially important for your face. Always rinse skin with warm water and gently pat dry, never rub.

Try to keep moisture in the house as well. This can be accomplished with a humidifier or if one is not available, bowls of water on the vents will work also. The bedroom should have a bowl of water at all times. While you are sleeping is the best time for the skin to soak up the moisture. It is important to put clean water in the bowl every day.

When moisturizers are applied after bathing they will be more beneficial. The skin will readily soak up the moisture so use a thick moisturizer for the best results. Any time you are going outside there should be moisturizer on the mouth, eye area and any exposed skin.

Cleaning products are very hard on dry skin if using ones with harsh chemicals as an ingredient. There are many excellent naturally made cleaning products available that are easy on the skin. The most efficient products such as dish washing liquid have moisturizers in the soap. Shop for items that contain vegetable oils and natural cleaning substances.

Dry skin gets itchy but it is important to not scratch. If skin feels itchy use a spray bottle with distilled water and a drop or two of olive oil to spray on the areas that are itching. If this is not effective apply moisturizer over the water mist and gentle massage into dry itchy areas.

A wonderful and effective item for skin problems can be found in olive oil. The oil will immediately soak into the skin and will relieve the itching. Often times with dry skin comes dry hair. Apply the oil into your hair and scalp, massaging lightly for a few minutes then rinse out with warm water.

Shea butter is excellent for dry skin as well. It also will minimize scars, make wrinkles appear smaller and can make brittle hair extremely shiny. There are different ways to purchase the butter. One is in a raw form; this has a strong odor to it until the body absorbs it. The best way to use the butter is purchasing products that have a large content in the ingredients.

* Read the labels, not just the name of the product. Some products will include the word organic in their name, but on closer inspection of the ingredients you wont find any organic ingredients at all.

* Check the label to see whether the ingredients include petroleum, synthetic preservatives or artificial colors. Also watch out for parabens and phthaltes.

* You can also consult the Environmental Working Groups Skin Deep website, www.cosmeticsdatabase.com. You can enter the name of the products you use and see whether they contain ingredients you want to avoid.
